Highlights of the February 25, 2003, Regular Meeting of the Minford Local Board of Education

Greg Romanello of Gilbane-Regency-Polytech, construction managers for the building project, gave an update on the primary renovation and addition.

Dennis Meade, Superintendent, discussed the ice storm effects and the pending legislation being introduced in the General Assembly by Representative Todd Book and Senator Douglas White. The bill would provide relief for days missed due to the ice storm. Also discussed were projects for the high school and elementary school that will utilize State and local interest earned.

Eleanor Karshner, Treasurer, reported on the changes in the State and local funding with a reduction of $264,000. From the July estimates and another $200,000 plus being reduced from our budget of the Governor's cuts are implemented.

In action, the Board:

* Adjusted the salary of Jill Yuhas to a Bachelors +5. Congratulations, Jill!

* Approved the Open Enrollment program for school year 2003-2004 and accepted the Guidelines and Procedures Handbook.

* Employed Fran Conkel as an On Board Trainer for bus driver candidates.

* Authorized advertisement for bids on one or more buses pending adequate available funds.

* Authorized advertising for fixed bids on supplying bread and milk products for 2003-2004 school year.

* Declared the week of May 4-10, 2003, as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week. Minford Schools are blessed with excellent teachers and support staff. We celebrate their achievements in improving learning opportunities for our students.

* Approved a change order for using pelletized lime on the building project roadways.

DUE TO THE ICE STORM....

The six weeks period is extened through March 7, 2003, and the proficiency test schedule is modified as follows:

Thursday March 6 Writing
Friday March 7 Reading
Tuesday March 11 Math
Thursday March 13 Citizenship
Tuesday March 18 Science

Makeups will occur on alternate days and prior to the deadline of March 23. This schedule allows for some last minute instruction to occur while not backing ourselves into a corner should weather interruptions reoccur.

Food loss and ice removal cost are being determined and submitted to FEMA. We were fortunate in that we did not suffer much loss or damgage compared to others in the county. Let's count our blessing and hope for spring.
