Highlights of the April 20, 2005, Regular Meetings of the Minford Local Board of Education
Reports by the Minford Parent-Teacher Association and the Minford Athletic Boosters were received by the Board. Travy Grasso and Tonya Thoroughman Discussed the PTO's efforts this past year and possible projects for the next school year. Terri Zempter and Jerry Coburn discussed the new organizational efforts and their booster's contribution to the sports program. The Falcon Fortune will be May 21 and tickets may be purchased by contacting members.
Lori Rolfe, Academically Advanced Program Teacher-Coordinator reported on the program's planned trip to Toronto, Canada. Students will experience several wonderful events during their trip.
Troy Huff, Board President, thanked the presenters and directed that a committee be formed of principals and organization officers to work together to coordinate fund raisers and activities for the benefit of the students and the schools.
John Jenkins, Athletic Complex Committee Chair, reported on the committee's latest meeting and discussed the efforts to design a new fieldhouse. Also discussed were efforts to look at lease-purchase plans to fund the improvements.
Bob Shaffer, High School Principal, reported on the latest student activities.
the Hiring Committee Guidelines are ready for final approval according to Committee Chair, Troy Huff and member, Mark Caudill.
Dennis Meade, Superintendent, reported the Policy Review Committee work for the second reading and final approval of proposed policies.
Elementary Principal, Tim Allen, reported on the elementary bleacher quotes. Bleachers will be installed in the elementary gym as a result of contributions from the Minford Pee Wee Basketball Program, Minford PTO, Elementary Principals' fun and the Minford Board of Education. President Huff reported that the Minford Pee Wee organization would be increasing their contribution so that the principal's fund could be utilized school-wide.
Anita McGinnis, Board Vice-president and OSBA Legislative Liasion reported our current house bills and John Jenkins, Student Achievement Delegate for OSBA reported on the call for OSBA Achievement Fair applications.
Eleanor Karshner, Treasurer, discussed the most recent budget figures and the efforts to secure quotes on the lease purchase idea.
Superintendent Meade passed brochures to the Board which discussed the Statewide Coalition for Equity and Adequacy in school funding and their past and present efforts on behalf of Ohio's school children. A picture of Minford High School is displayed in the brochure as an example of the building program brought on by the DeRolph suit.
A letter was read praising the Minford Winter Guard drill team and their performance at the Lawrence County MRDD school. Jamie and Leslie Martin and Visual Technician, Bill Burroway, were thanked for "stressing the importance of acceptance of people with MR/DD to your guard members".
Superintendent Meade displayed a certificate honoring Shane Price as an All REgion member of the NSCAA/Adidas All Region Soccer Team
In action the Board:
Changed the date of the May Board Meeting to May 26, 2005, 6:00 p.m., in the High School Media Center.
Changed the Record Commission meeting to May 26, 2005, at 5:30p.m., in the High School Media Center.
Approved the following resolution of support of a Constitutional Amendment on School funding:
WHEREAS, the Ohio Constitution requires the state to secure a through and efficient system of common schools, and
WHEREAS, the Ohio Supreme Court has ruled Ohio's system of school funding unconstitutional four times, and
WHEREAS, the State Defendants were ordered to give the school funding system a complete systematic overhaul including the reduction of reliance aon propert taxes and the establishment of rational basis for the school foundation program, and
WHEREAS, the state has failed to satisfy its consitutional obligation to provide and adequately fund a high quality public education for all of Ohio's children, including the children of this school district, and
WHEREAS, all politcal power is inherent in "we the people", and
WHEREAS, a constitutional amendment will establish public education as a fundamental right, and will establish a rational process to identify and cost the learning resources inherent in a thorough and efficient system of public education, and will guarantee access to high quality educational opportunities for all students, and will substantially reduce reliance on property tax as a source of funding schools, and will require the state to provide adequate funding to ensure access to high quality educational opportunities for all student and will hold harmless all school districts at their current level of state and local revenue.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: The Board of Education of the Minford Local School District supports the passage of such a constitutional amendment and would encourage all students, faculty, staff and members of the public to support such a constitutional amendment, and directs the Treasurer to forward a copy of this resolution to the Educate Ohio Committee, 16840 Ringneck Circle, Strongsville, OH 44136, to all statewide education organizations and t\o the news media.

Authorized the Treasurer to seek bids for architectural and financial services regarding the Athletic Complex plans.
