Description of Minford Local Schools

The Minford Local School District was listed as an Academic Watch district having successfully completed 13 of 27 indicators on the 2000 Ohio Department of Education Report Card.  The district, located in Scioto County, a rural county in southern Ohio, is composed of three educational buildings; a K-3 primary school housing approximately 500 students with 36 certified staff, a 4-8 middle school housing approximately 620 students and 41 professional staff and a high school of 515 students and 33 professional staff.  Students attending Minford High have the opportunity to attend the Scioto County Joint Vocational School beginning with their junior year.  Post secondary options are available to Minford's students at the nearby Shawnee State University and Ohio University Southern Campus.  However, records accumulated by the guidance office indicate that fewer than 50% of the district's graduates complete two or more years at an institution of higher learning following high school.
The district spans approximately 98 square miles of territory with a full-time transportation fleet of 16.5 buses running double routes to transport nearly 90% of the students daily.  The district's fleet exceeded 275,000 miles traveled during the 1998-'99 school year with of 95% of the miles being the routine daily transportation of district students to and from school.
Financed by a grant from the Ohio School Facilities Commission representing over 93% of the total costs, new facilities and renovations to existing facilities are currently under construction.  Community excitement is high with the anticipated opening of a modern 100,00+ square foot high school building scheduled for October, 2000.  The current middle school, built in 1922, is being replaced by a larger, new facility on the site of the existing high school which is scheduled to be razed.  The primary building will be renovated and expanded to meet the increasing educational needs of our staff and students.  Final completion of all construction and renovation for the district is scheduled for 2002.

Demographics of the district which are seen as contributing factors to the Academic Watch designation include an annual per capita income of less than $22,000 per family and an average of nearly 20% of the student population residing in families receiving some type of public assistance through the Department of Human Services.  More than 50% of the student population qualifies for free or reduced price lunches according to Federal guidelines.
