National Honor Society History

In 1900 the National Honor Society was established to serve secondary high schools.  Members are selected for this society in their sixth, seventh, or eighth semester in high school on the basis of their CHARACTER, SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP, and SERVICE.

The Minford High School Chapter, named the Butcher-Coriell Chapter in honor of Mr. Paul Butcher and Mr. William Coriell, was organized March 25, 1955. A photo of Mr. Butcher and Mr. Coriell are on the left.  Mr. Butcher was a science teacher at Minford High School.  On November 19, 1955, he suffered a cerebral hemmorrhage at his home and died.  Mr. Coriell was the guidance counselor at the high school when the National Honor Society was started.

The first members were sworn into office April 29, 1955, by the Amy Mitchell Chapter of Portsmouth West High School.  A photo of the first National Honor Society at Minford High School is below.
