Leonard "Moose" Whitley, 83, of Minford, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, in the Elbrooke Pavilion at the Minford Retirement Center.

Born Dec. 12. 1920, in Portsmouth, to the late Henry and Linnie Mason Whitley, he retired as captain from the Southern Ohio Correctional Faclilty with 34 years of service. Woody was an Army vetertan of World War II, having served with the Big Red One. He was a 1939 graduate of Minford High School, former Mason and a member fo the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles and Moose.

He was a preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Austin Whitley Dec. 15, 1987; one sister, Betty Ruth Whitley; and three brothers, Dan Whitley, Edgar Whitley and Ott Whitley.

Surviving are three sisters Alafair Shonkwiler of Sciotoville, Myrtle Hughes of Wheelersburg and Mabel Gee of Findlay; a niece and her husband, Willa and Art Marion of Sciotoville, who served as his cargivers; and several additional nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Brant Funeral Home in Sciotoville with the Rev. Peter Michael officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park with military honors by the James Dickey Post of the American Legion. Friends may call at Brant Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. An honor guard will be posted from the S.O.C.F.
