Dr. Roy Harrison Adams

Dr. Roy Adams died Oct. 12, 2004, at Southern
Ohio Medical Center of pneumonia after an extended illness.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sally Ann Chinn. He was
preceded in death by his son, the Rev. Roy H. Adams Jr. Also, he is survived
by his daughter, Dr. Rita Adams-Slone; two younger brothers, Lester Adams of
New Boston, and Paul Adams of Portsmouth; and two grandchildren, Duke Slone
of Minford and Stacy Neisler of Spring Hill, Tenn.
Dr. Adams was born July 3, 1920, on Taft Street in New Boston to George
Adams and Malissie Mault. He was a graduated of Glenewood High School
in the class of 1938. He received his bachelor of arts degree in Microbiology
from the Ohio State University in 1942. He received his medical degree
from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and his postgraduate internship
at Doctor's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He was in an accelerated program
during WWII and graduated in 1945 and 1946 respectively.
He was a member of the following medical associations: Columbus
Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, Ohio Osteopathic Association, American Osteopathic
Association, Scioto County Medical Society, Ohio Medical Association, American
Medical Association, Aerospace Medical Association and the Civil Aviation Medical
Association.
He was a founding lifetime member and fellow of the American College
of Osteopathic Family Physicians. He was a Federal Aviation Medical Examiner
and Federal Aviation Accident Investigator for more than 30 years. He
was Scioto County Health Commissioner for about 20 years and Scioto County Coroner
for 8 years. He was on the board of Southern Hill Hospital and on the
board of the combined Scioto Memorial Hospital and Southern Hills Hospital. He
was a delegate to the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. He
was secretary-treasurer of the Ohio Chapter of American College of Osteopathic
Family Physicians as well as its president for 2 years.
Dr. Adams was elected to two terms on the Minford Board of Education
and was its president for 4 years. He was a member of the Masonic Blue
Lodge in Portsmouth as well as the Knights Templar. He was in the Scottish Rite
in Cincinnati and the Shrine of El Hasa in Ashland, Ky. He belonged to
the ELKS. He was a life member of the American Rifle Association. He
was a life member of the Ohio State Alumni Association and the Varsity O Club. He
earned his athletic letter for his participation on the rifle team which won
national honors. He was a life member of the American Numismatic Association
and the Penn-Ohio Coin Club to which he was president for 4 years. Also,
he was a member of the Pennsylvania and Canadian Numismatic Association as well
as the Ohio Valley Coin Club and Liberty Seated Collection. He was a member
of the Minford United Methodist Church having served several years as chairman
of its administrative board.
Dr. Adams will be missed by his family and friends. Viewing is
to be at the Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home. Thursday 14th from 6 to
8 p.m. The funeral will be at the Minford United Methodist Church under
the direction of Pastor Tim Bennett at 2 p.m. on Friday. Interment will
be at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg, Ohio.
