Abraham Coriell

 

Abraham Coriell was the first of the Harrison and Madison Township Coriells to be born in Scioto County. He was born in Portsmouth, in 1818, shortly after his family's arrival there.. He was a year old when his family moved to Harrison Township to farm. He lived with his family until he was fourteen years old. At that time he was apprenticed to John Clugsten, a jeweler. He served in apprenticeship until he was twenty-one. At that time he moved to Chillicothe and worked at the A.J. Clarke jewelry store for one year. He returned to Portsmouth and worked with Mr. Clugsten until 1842, when he started his own jewelry store. On August 5, 1842, Abraham married Mary White daughter of the pioneer, Daniel White. They moved to Portsmouth where Abraham operated his jewelry store for fifty-four years.
