Jonathon Sherman Dodge was born in Madison Township to George Lyons Dodge and Sarah Louise Tibbs. He attended law school and graduated from the Cincinnati School of Law. He married Mary A. Fritz and they settled in Portsmouth where they raised their children: Alice Cora, Anna Louise, and Charles Anderson.
