Thaddeus Bennett

Thaddeus Bennett was a Revolutionary War soldier.  His wives were [1] Sheba Eunice Bentley, daughter of Green and Diana Straight, and a niece of General Nathaniel Greene; [2] Elizabeth Mead? who died May 7, 1826, and [3] Rachael Cheney whom he married August 17, 1828 in Scioto Co., OH.

[All of these children were born in NY].

Children of Thaddeus Bennett and Elizabeth Mead are: Thomas Bennett who married Nancy Fullerson in Scioto Co.; Ira G. Bennett who married Rhoda Hayes in Scioto Co.  It is said that two of Ira's boys died in a house fire at Dixon's Mill.

Children of Thaddeus Bennett and Rachael Cheney are: Jesse Bennett who never married; Catherine Bennett who married John Taubet in Scioto Co.; and Elizabeth "Betsy Ann" Bennett who married Walter Lindsey in Scioto Co.

Family lore says that Thaddeus and his family came down the Allegheny River on a poll raft to the Ohio River between 1810 and 1813.  They settled first in Portsmouth and then moved twenty miles northeast to what was to become known as Harrisonville, OH.  Here, he and his son, Joseph, built an eight room log cabin on what is now called High Street.  Thaddeus and Joseph were ordained Baptist ministers.  They also served in the American Revolution.

Both men were friends of William Henry Harrison before he was President.  Harrison used to visit the Bennetts in their log cabin home.  Harrison Township and the village of Harrisonville were named in his honor.

Thaddeus and Joseph are buried in the Old Bennett Cemetery which sets beside the Grange Hall on St. Rte. 335 in Minford, OH.  It is interesting to note that Henry Lantz wrote in 1941, that Thaddeus Bennett was first buried on the Ketter place between Sciotoville and Swicker Hill Rd.  His descendants had his remains moved to the Old Bennett Cemetery some years later, around 1935.
