In November of 1949, more than 3/4 of the residents of the Minford School District voted in favor of a bond issue to began a building expansion project.
Enrollment had continued to increase throughout the years, and even more classrooms were needed to accomodate the number of students enrolled. One reason for the enrollment boom was the new A-plant that was built in Pike County.
The building project was started on May 15, 1950. The contractor was George A. Suter.
Before the expansion, the seating capacity of the Minford High School gymnasium could accomodate only 240 people. The new gymnasium had a seating capacity 1,140!
The new gym seats a natural varnish finish. The seating blocks, border around the floor were painted in school colors. Public toilets for both men and women were placed north and south of the stage. The shower rooms for teams only were under the bleachers.
The new gymnasium was the second largest in Scioto County. Grant Elementary in Portsmouth had the county's largest gymnasium. The total cost of the new gym was $40,562.
There was a gymnasium dedication ceremony held before the Minford/Valley Varsity basketball game to introduce the community to the new facility. Tickets were given out for two lucky ladies to win a dozen red roses each. The men had a chance to win an electric clock. The captain of the winning team for both varsity and reserve were given a geniune silver dollar after the games. A turkey was given away by the senior class.
Eleven more rooms were added to the high school building.
The south side building addition was completed in early 1951.
The total cost of the 1950 - 1951 expansion project was $190,000.
