Former Pro Football Star is Aided in Mat Duel by Gridiron Drill
Following the idea of a certain Mr. Gus Sonnenberg, who carried his football tactics into the wrestling arena's mat, Walter Achiu, former Dayton, O., universly gridiron star and who also played professional football last season with the powerful Portsmouth, O., Spartans, uncorked two flashy tackles on the 50 yard line of the Charleston armory's wrestling mat here Monday night to hold Jack Gorman, the mythical back, for downs and gain possession of a decision in their two out of three fall, two-hour time limit main-go match.
Achiu's tackles won both falls for him although the rough and tumble Gorman came back, after the intial tumble in the Chinaman's favor, to win the second fall with a terrific body slaw which gave out a noise as if a bucket of bones had been dropped on a sheet of tin. However, the former pro gridiron backfield ace, slapped his two wings round the legs of Gorman in the deciding fall and charged with the power of a locomotive to pin his opponent and win the match.
The semi-final went to a draw. It was wrestled between Jack Kogut and Marion Mynster. Thirty-minutes was the time limit. The one preliminary went to "Pee-wee" Carney when he pinned Haggarty Burgess.
