Rickey's Ties To OWU Held Through Life

DELAWARE, Ohio (AP) - Branch Rickey's baseball career was matched in lonevity by his interest in Ohio Wesleyan University, his alma mater.

The Stockdale, Ohio, native came to the campus here as a student at the turn of the century and at the time of his death Thursday night was national chairman of the Methodist school's "Thrust Toward Fulfillment," a fund - raising drive.

Rickey received three degrees from Ohio Wesleyan-a bachelor of arts in 1906 and an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1947. He also was a life trustee.

Between 1906 and 1909, althrough playing professional baseball part of the time, he was director of athletics, coach YMCA official and teacher (law) at the university.

His wife, Jane, is a 1903 Ohio Wesleyan graduate. Several of their children attended the university and three grandchildren are now students here.
