The Big Wheel
Article taken from The Daily Democrat, September 17, 1873
The Sedalia Foundry Company east a fly-wheel at their shops yesterday
evening, which weighed 3000 pounds and is 6 1/2 feet in diameter. The
wheel is for the Osage Iron Works of Mssers. Condee and Campbell and
is the largest piece of work of the kind ever cast in Sedalia. Although the first of the kind, a perfect wheel was moulded at the first attempt. Mr. J. L. Hastings the present superintendent of the shops, is from the well known shops of Portsmouth, Ohio, and fully understands every thing connected with a foundry and machine shops. Under his direction an engine is being manufactured for Porter's mill at Houstonia, in several other pieces of work which here tofore could be bought in eastern cities are being constructed in the shops. This shows that any kind of machinery can be manufactured in Sedalia, as well and as cheap as elsewhere and we bespeak a patentronage for home manufactures in preference to any other. |
