In 1843, John Quincy Adams arrived on the "Ben Franklin No. 6" and announced that he would make an address. The schools were dismissed for half the day and the children formed a procession to Bigelow Church.

A cannon on board the boat announced the former President's arrival. Adams shook hands with everyone present and a brass band played for the event.
