Dr. David Crees, a resident of Portsmouth for the last 35 years, died at his residence on East Second street, Monday forenoon, April 10th, of lung fever predisposed by a violent cold contracted at the Governor meeting in October last. The deceased was born in Alleghany county, Pennsylvania, March 15, 1809, and after arriving at the age of maturity, was united in marriage to Isabella Fleming, who survives him. Seven children were born to them, five of which died in childhood. Two are living, Rebecca, wife of John Micklethwait, and Mary V. wife of Geo. W. Jones. Dr. Crees worked at his trade as carpenter until about 20 years ago, when he received injuries of the spine by a fall from the Adamson mill he was building near the present site of the water works building. He then began the practice of Homeopathic medicine, which he had been industriously studying for years.
Dr. Crees was a member of the Presbyterian church, and was the first leader
of the choir in the old church that stood below the Massie block, on
Second street His funeral services were conducted at the First
Presbyterian Church, last Wednesday, by Dr. Pratt assisted by Rev. Bethauser
of Sixth
Street M. E. Church.
