Portsmouth in Flames

Article taken from the Alaska Citizen, March 31, 1913

Columbus, March 30 -

The whole town of Portsmouth, situated on the Ohio at the mouth of the Scioto, is in flames and the inhabitants are fleeing for their lives.  The water is flowing in various parts of the city with a depth of 70 feet.

The Scioto river has changed its entire course and is now in the bed that it occupied prior to 1884 when it changed.  The territory along the old river bed has been thickly inhabited and the river is flowing through the residences that are not already swept away.
