Julia's Endorsements

In typical celebrity style, Julia did product endorsements. Items with her picture and voice were also in high demand.

The Julia Marlowe shoe was also manufactured and became very popular in 1899.  The following advertisement appeared in the October 8, 1899 issue of The Atlanta Constitution newspaper:

The Julia Marlowe Shoe--A Peculiar Construction Secures a Perfect Instep

The peculiar construction of the Julia Marlowe Shoe is a small spot of Silk Elastic on the instep.  This secures a perfect adaptation of Shoe to foot, thus avoiding those flabby wrinkles which often appear in the hollow of the Shoe to the dismay and mortification of the sensitive wearer; and the gently yielding qualities of the elastic give perfect ease and comfort even though the fit by very close.

Julia Marlowe Shoes made on aristocratic lasts from A and E and of the finest quality of Vici, all Kid or with Silk Vesting tops, hand turned and McKay welts, coin, toe with self or patent leather tip, lace or button closing at $3.50 or in tan with Silk Vesting top $3.00.

She was a spokesperson for a nerve tonic product called Perune.  In the June 12, 1901 edition of the Sandusky Daily Star newspaper, Julia's picture appeared in the following advertisement for Peruna Medicine:

"What Peruna Has Done For a Brilliant Actress"

In a recent letter to The Perune Medicine Co., Miss Julia Marlowe of New York City, has the following to say of Peruna:

"I am glad to write my endorsement of the great remedy, Peruna, a nerve tonic.  I do so most heartily."  Julia Marlowe

Nervouseness is very common among women.  This condition is due to anemic nerve centers.  The nerve centers are the reservoirs of nervous vitality.  These centers become bloodless for want of proper nutrition.  This is especially true in the spring season.  Every spring a host of invalids are produced as the direct result of weak nerves.

This could be easily obviated by the use of Peruna.  Peruna strikes at the root of the difficulty by correcting the digestion.  Digestion furnishes nutrition for the nerve centers.  Properly digested food furnishes these reservoirs of life with vitality which leads to strong, steady nerves, and thus nourishes life.

Peruna is in gret favor among women, especially those who have vacations that are trying to the nervous system.  Peruna furnishes the lasting invigoration for the nerves that such people so much need.  Thousands of testimonials from women in all parts of the United States are being received every year.  Such unsolicited evidence surely proves that Peruna is without an equal as a nerve tonic and vital invigorator.

Buy a bottle of Peruna today.  If you do not receive all the benefits from Peruna that you expected, write to Dr. Hartman, Columbus, Ohio.

In 1906, picture postcards became very popular.  An article in The Washington Post, Sunday, December 2, 1906 stated:

(Card found at a local antique dealer)

"The actress card is a good seller.  Of all actresses Maude Adams is the most popular, judging by our sales, and next to her comes Julia Marlowe.  Although there are complete sets of masculine stars, the demand for them is small."

An ad appearing in The Washington Post, Tuesday, February 1, 1910, p. 7:

Julia sold her autograph for chairty according to a report in The Washington Post, Thursday, October 27, 1910:

"Others are not so modest, however.  Alfred Austin, poet laureate of Great Britain, sells his autograph for 50 cents apiece, American money.  All the revenue from this source he turns over to a London charity.  Julia Marlowe sells her autographs for $1 each, and Kate Doublas Wiggin, the author, get 50 cents for hers.  Both turn the proceeds over to charitable purposes."

In 1921 and 1922, Victor Records sold recordings of Julia's plays.  Examples are below:

Taming of the Shrew, Parts I & II by E. H. Sothern & Julia Marlowe, Red Seal Records

The Merchant of Venice by E. H. Sothern & Julia Marlowe

Even her astrological chart was published in The Mansfield News, Mansfield, Ohio, August 17, 1926 in celebration of her birthday:
