Nine indictments were on file by the grand jury against Maurice J. Caldwell, former Republican sheriff of Scioto-co.  He was free under $3,000 bond after pleading not guilty late yesterday.

Six of the indictments charged Caldwell with issuing false statements in his expense accounts for returning prisoners, and three had been secret until he surrendered to Sheriff Al Bridwell, his successor.  Bridwell formerly was a deputy to Caldwell, who resigned as sheriff several days ago.

Prosecutor CAmeron Meachman, Democrat, who opened an extensive investigation of public officials here at the request of the Republican county executive committee said six of Caldwell's expense accounts showed an excess of $599 over actual expenditures.
