O. E. McConkey, 47, of Chillicothe, alias J. A. Markham, of Portsmouth, confessed to Mayor Vern Woehler that he was wanted at Chillicothe on forgery charges at a hearing held in police court here last night.
McConkey was arrested here Tuesday by police shortly after he attempted to cash a forged check in a downtown store. At the time, he registered as Markham and told authorities that he had been employed by a Van Scoick family on a farm south of here. An investigation failed to disclose a farmer by that name. He adhered to his story until taken in police court when he broke down and confessed that he had deserted a wife and three children 10 days ago and then forged three checks to secure money.
Chillicothe police were immediately notified and asked local police to hold McConkey until their arrival here. Local police were told that three separate charges were held against the man.
