A West Point cadet who had been standout scholar and athlete in Ohio has been missing for seven weeks, the U.S. Military Academy reported Thursday.
A widespread search has produced no trace of the youth, Paul M. Weaver II, 18, of Portsmouth, Ohio.
Officials said that he had on several occasions said he intended to resign from the academy.
Academy authorities said he had told Capt. John W. McCormick Jr., tactical officer, that he had expected more of a college atmosphere and that the military regime was more stringent than he had expected.
However, he appeared to have adjusted to the academy life in the week or two before he vanished at 9 a.m. on Aug. 30. He had entered the academy July 5.
The case recalled that of Richard C. Cox, who disappeared from the academy in 1950. No trace ever was found of Cox, whose home was in Mansfield, Ohio.
