STATE PUTS HEAT ON BINGO CLUB IN SCIOTO AREA

A state move has halted bingo at the Chez Paree in Wheelersburg, but a countermove is ecpected today. Attorney Ernest G. Littleton said yesterday he will file a motion to have set aside the temporary restraining order issued against the Scioto County spot. Common Pleas Judge William D. Radcliff of Pickaway County, sitting by assignment, issued the order yesterday. It was asked by Asst. Atty. Gen. Robert B. Krupansky, prodded by Gov. Frank J Lausche who said there had been numerous complaints about the club.

The judge said he would set a later date for hearing on wheather the padlock order should be made permanent. After studying affidavits signed by state liquor agents saying they saw bingo played at Chex Paree Judge Radcliff said he would accept the game as "one of the lotteries against which the Legislature has spoken...." Sheriff Burl Justice last night posted a copy of the court order on a door at the Chez Paree. Judge Radcliff was given the case after Krupansky filed an atfidavit of prejudice against Scioto County Common Pleas Judge Vernon Smith, charging he "is a close social friend of one of the defendants and therefore unable to sit impartially in the case."

Chez Paree Attorneys To Fight Temporary Restraining Order

Common Pleas Judge Vernon Smith has set a hearing this morning on a state move to padlock a big bingo game at the Chez Paree in Wheelersburg, Scioto County. Judge smith set the hearing after a conference late yesterday with Asst. Atty. Gen Robert B. Krupansky. The state has asked a tomporary restraining order against operation of the club. Gov. Frank J. Lausche earlier announced he and the attorney general would start proceedings against bingo operation. Scioto County Prosecutor William H. Harsha Jr. said the Chez Paree is reportedly a "charitable setup." But Harsha said he plans to introduce facts on the Chez Paree to the May 1 term of the county grand jury, regardless of action on the state move.
