Article taken from The Mitchell Daily Republican, February 15, 1889

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio, Feb. 15. - A curious phenomenon has been discovered in the hills of Dry Run by a fire-clay digger.  Tuesday he was digging, and when about four or five feet below the surface a stream of hot air broke out of the ground like a spring.  The heat imparted is sufficient to produce steam from cold water.  A thorough investigation of the phenomenon will be made.
