Portsmouth, O., Jan. 23.--Jesse Niece, a mill man, shot and probably fatally wounded John Jamison, a carpenter and the alleged despoiler of the former's home, at New Boston, a suburb.

The shooting occurred within a few feet of Niece's home. Just as he was returning from work the two men, both armed, met in the roadway. Jamison had an injured hand and when he attempted to reason his pistol with the other. Niece shot him through the back. He then took to the hills, but returned later. He was in the act of reloading his revolver in an up stairs room of his home when arrested. Jamison was rushed to a hospital and is said to have a small chance of recovery.

The two men were sworn enemies for a year or more, because of Jamison's persistent attentions to Mrs.Niece. He is married and the father of several children.
