Woman Named Head of House Tax Committee

Columbus, O., Jan 8 -- (UP) -- A little embarrassed by congratulations poured upon her as a result of her appointment, Miss Ruth Lloyd, member of the house from Scioto-co, expressed confidence today in her ability to hold down the job as chairman of the house taxation committee.

The first woman legislator in Ohio ever to head this important committee, Miss Lloyd was appointed yesterday by speaker Frank R. Uible.  She is the only woman on the committee which has a membership of 23 representatives.

"I hope to be able to conduct work of this committee as efficiently as any of my male colleagues would," Miss Lloyd said.  "In any event, I shall do my best."

She said she is not planning to sponsor any particular taxation measures, but pointed out that the chairman of this committee is frequently called upon to be the titular author of administration tax bills.

Miss Lloyd is an attorney and has practiced law in Portsmouth for several years.  She is 31 years old and a graduate of Ohio State university law college, class of 1929.  Her first try for political office was in 1934, when she was elected for her frist term as representative.  Last year she was elected for her first term as representative.  Last year she was re-elected for her first term as representative.  Last year she was re-elected by a majority more than twice as large as that given her in 1934.
