Article taken from The Portsmouth Times, January 21, 1893

Lorenzo Dow McKinney lives at Ryan. He has a sleigh. It is a rough looking specimen. But Mr. McKinney is proud of his possession. He drove to town in that old rattle-trap last tuesday, and went right down the principal streets of the city. That sleigh could bot be bought. Mr. McKinney says it is the oldest vehicle of the kind in America. He calls it "old hickory" because it was made during the administration of Andrew Jackson. The owner is an Andrew Jackson democrat and predicts success for his party as long as the old sleigh lasts. It was made by Ralph Samson in 1831. Mr. McKinney has owned it since 1844. No, sir; your can't buy that sleigh.
