Scouts in Rubbish Drive

Article taken from The Commerce Journal, January 24, 1918

A sanitary survey was conducted by the scouts of Portsmouth, Oh., at the request of the mayor.

Deputized for this special work, 212 scouts took one city block each, being excused from school for this service.

They assembled at the city hall, where they received instructions. Then they scattered to their assigned blocks, made the inspection and returned with their reports to their troop headquaters.

The reports covered the condition of alley's back yards and garage. The boys also took census of gardens being planted. The survey was followed by general cleanup campaigns in which the bad conditions were discovered and remedied.
