New Official's Bond Refused

Article taken from The Salem Daily News, September 13, 1895

The books of Leonidas Pyles, treasurer of Nile township, show a shortage of $310. This was discovered by the examination that was held when Pyles was to surrender his office to his successor. Dr. James Frizzell. Treasurer Pyles kept the township funds in the late Citizens' Savings bank, and when that institution failed, the shortage naturally ensued. An effort was made by the trustees to make the treasurer pay, but so far without success. Further complications have been brought about by the trustees refusing to accept the bond of Treasurer-elect Frizzell. His sureties were Hon. M. Stanton and J. M. Wall, but they were refused on the grounds that they were bankers. Another bond with John T. Miller and s. D. Easter as sureties, was offered, but was refused by the trustees for reasons not made public. By this action the township is legally without a treasurer. Dr. Frizzell refuses to furnish another bond, and Pyles has been removed from office owing to the shortage.
