Union School

We now invite attention to the following statements in relation to the Union School in Portsmouth:

"From the Report of our school, for the quarter ending March 30th, 1849, you will see that the number of pupils enrolled was 693, average daily attendance 499, average number connected with the school 599, and then ten teachers were employed.

"The receipts of the town for school purposes, for the fiscal year ending the 30th were, from state and county levies, $1223.82; Corporation levy, $1386.31 rents from school property, $400; tuition fees of non-residents pupils, $117.18; amountion in all to $3128.13. The expenditures were for teacher's salaries, $2236.70; incidental expenses, $345.89 together amounting to $2581.59. The cost of conduction the school per pupil, connected witht eh school per year, was $4.70, exclusive of the interest on the money invested in the school building, furniture, lots; inclusive of this perhaps the cost per pupil would amount to $5.65. Cheap enough surely. Eight of our teachers are females.
