400 Shoe Workers End Long Portsmouth Strike
Their six-week strike ended by orders of union leaders, approximently 400 workers of the Williams Manufacturing company went to the shoe plant today and registered with the employment office.
The marchers, led by officers of the Shoe Workers Organizing Committee, a CIO affiliate, were ordely.
Few will be rehired immediately, A. Hrave Williams, president of the firm, announced, because of the curtailment in production caused by the walkout.
William Mahan, feild organizer, said the union had not yeilded in its demand for recognition and that the workers were ordered back to their jobs pending action by that national labor relations board.
