8th Grade Olympics
All
three of Ms. Butcher’s classes recently participated
in a brief unit on the Olympics.
The studies covered the
following: ancient games,
modern games, and traditions and symbols. The unit was
concluded with a classroom Olympics.
The students chose
partners and devised an event that measured some type
of skill that could be measured as well as conducted
in the classroom.
The student partnerships created
certificates
for the gold, silver, and bronze medalists for their
event.
The students also made record sheets for keeping the
statistics of the event.
A short awards ceremony was
held
and students
presented the certificates to the top three competitors
in their events.
Classroom winners were awarded
then
an overall Olympic champion was recognized. The whole activity
was quite memorable, as can be seen from the pictures!

Show Off
Day
Ms. Butcher's 8th grade classes recently participated in Show Off Day.
Show Off Day, simply stated is nothing other than a big kid's show and tell.
Students brought in everything froms dogs, cats, and rabbits to photographs, homemade videos, and
awards.
Students also showed off their skills, for example, karate moves.
The students made a 2 - 5 minute pra; presentation, explaining all the good details
about their show exhibit
When finished, the audience was allowed to ask questions.
Show off day was to know their peers a little better but also to practice their oral
speaking skills
Obviously from the pics, the Class of 2011 knows how to show off!

CPR Classes
Ms. Butcher’s students completed an introductory course on basic CPR for adults,
children, and infants along with the Heimlich
maneuver.
Mr.
Jeff Hall, a certified paramedic with our own EMS, visited the classroom, allowing the students to “go through the motions” of
basic CPR.
Tony
Wheeler, a former MMS student, came along as
Mr. Hall’s assistant. Prior to the visit, students were provided with a Family and Friends CPR booklet. The booklet was read in class in groups, and students answered various related
questions.
